JUNE 6 & 7, 2009

BEYOND WORDS: HARNESSING THE POWER OF INTENTION IN TRAINING

Before your dog can do what you want, you need to be clear about exactly what you want when. Many problems have their root in not having a plan and/or not having options if what you thought would work doesn’t.This is a hands on, concrete class about cleaning up YOUR act: Your movement, your energy, your language, your intentions. And when the static clears – watch your dog’s understanding clear as well.If you’re having trouble with advanced work, issues causing the problem can usually be found here. Taught with Sarah’s usual commitment to fun and growth.

STAY – WAIT – PLACE: GOING NOWHERE FAST!

Learn how to put your dog in “park” and have them stay there (happily). Work the four variables of any stationary command (distance, distraction, duration, diversity). Teach your dog to crate themselves and wait patiently (in an open crate) for verbal release, to “place” reliably when someone is at the door, to hold a solid start line wait, and more. Find out the common mistakes people make with these behaviors and how to avoid them (and if it’s too late for that, how to fix them).

REAL-LIFE DOG TRAINING: DAILY TASKS AND EMERGENCY SKILLS

"Training" goes great but real-life a bit more of a challange? Little stymied about how to integrate training into real life? This class is for you! You will learn how to use the training games to achieve calm, controlled connection in the car, on trips to the vet or groomer, at meal times, when visiting with friends, around other dogs, etc. You'll see which training games help at different times and get some practice thinking on your feet as we simulate various scenarios.

We'll also address emergency skills for those situations that thankfully aren't everyday occurrences. Rocketing recalls and emergency downs-- two skills that will keep your dog safe in almost any situation—as well as handling and restraint.

OUT OF SIGHT BUT NOT OUT OF MIND

When you really need your dog to listen, you won’t be looking into his eyes. But, most of us have trained our dogs by looking into their eyes and, in fact, when we stop, the dogs think training has stopped. So this session is devoted to exercises and games focused on removing your eye contact from your dog’s response. You and your dog will make great strides once you understand how to move past this common – but limited – behavioral road block.
