Question: Twice recently my dog has plowed into me when I was standing still. How can I tell if my dog is having vision problems?

Answer: Probably not. In the world of dogs (and in our world, too) the one in charge expects all others to move out of their way. Your dog may worry that YOU have a vision problem.... didn’t you see him coming? ;)

Slamming is usually a sign that things need to change – today. Start playing Mine! And Off! as shown in the My Smart Puppy DVD. You need to be effective and consistent about having him respect your space.

Start “You’re Grounded!” rules, outlined in the article of that same name in this library. Read all the “Your Responsibilities” articles. Yes, it is your dog’s behavior that must change but it can only change when you change first. That’s just the way it goes.

If you see your dog coming toward you at speed, when he is still 10 – 15 feet out take a few big steps toward him, clapping your hands and being assertive – Hey! The moment your dog veers, you stop. If you are concerned he won’t veer or could hurt you then seek professional guidance.

Some dogs are more physical than others. Some are more assertive than others but all can learn to treat you with respect – can and must. A dog who will slam into you can hurt you or hurt a child. There is no reason to this – start changing it today!

If your dog starts running into other things, being frightened to go outside in the evening or has eyes that look different than they used to, please speak to your veterinarian.
