Spaniels were bred to run in front of hunters and flush (scare) the birds into flight. Unlike pointers who staunchly hold still until the hunter catches up, the spaniel bounces gleefully about, looking for birds. It does the hunter no good to have the birds take flight out of range of his gun, so spaniels are supposed to stay close by at all times. Ideally, once the bird takes flight, the spaniel will sit while the shot is fired. When the bird falls, a command from his owner sends the spaniel to retrieve the bird. At least, that’s how it is supposed to work. And what dog does this work produce?
Compliant
Staying close to the hunter takes some self-control and willingness to please on the dog’s part. Correct spaniels are generally eager to make you happy. They joyfully obey with no concerns about who is or isn't in charge, they just know they aren't. Good spaniels are rarely aloof or difficult. Most take well to training.
Friendly
Not selected for any form of aggression, a correct spaniel is a happy dog who loves everyone equally. Though popularity has ravaged both the American Cocker and the English Springer, creating animals with horrible aggression problems, good dogs of both breeds are still some of the nicest dogs around. A good spaniel is well worth the trouble to locate.
Gregarious
These are generally not one-man dogs. Have cookie, will follow. If you want a dog that will love your kids and the neighbor's kids and that strange kid he just met, find a nice spaniel. If you want a dog to love you and ignore all others, look elsewhere.
Common Problems: Hyperactivity, Shyness, Submissive Wetting (American Cockers), Dominance Aggression & Possessiveness (American Cockers and English Springers).
The Good Home: Owners who have time for a good romp or a couple of long walks a day. Time and inclination for daily grooming is necessary with some of these breeds. Training and socialization necessary, but are rarely problems in a nice spaniel. A carefully bred specimen is wonderful for all ages.
