A Guide to Problem Solving
Focusing on hands-on work, this presentation explains how Brian and Sarah approach working a dog - their differences and similarities. The goal is to teach you how to quickly assess the issues and make a plan.
Equipment: Uses and Misuses
We've never had such a wide selection of training equipment to choose from making this both an exciting and rather confusing time. Here you learn correct and incorrect use of common equipment as well as whatever risks the tool may pose. Brian and Sarah will also talk about what they tend to use and why.
Reactives: Theory and Handling
Reactive dogs fill shelters, classes, dog runs and make up a chunk of our client base. Usually highly intelligent, these dogs can cause much frustration for both traditional and "all positive" trainers. See how to quickly get them "on board" using techniques that make "your idea their idea."
Independent/ "Disconnected" Dogs: Theory and Handling
What do you do when the dog doesn't want what you are offering? Petting and praise mean nothing, treats aren't of any interest either - now what? This demo is all about what you do when what you've been doing doesn't impress the dog.
Sensitive/ Shy Dogs: Theory and handling
Here are Sarah's favorites; the shy/sensitive dogs. The methods often used don't help because they overstep these dogs' limits, which keeps them thinking about retreat instead of approach. See techniques that get many dogs "all in" within minutes.
Deficit Dogs: Theory and Handling
Deficit dogs are genetically stable dogs who have lived a limited life. Strangers in a strange land after rescue, they can present like a classical shy dog but...if you look carefully you can see the differences. These dogs are capable of huge strides once you learn how to help them.
Traumatized/Abused Dogs: Theory and Handling
Truly traumatized/abused dogs need our help to grow more secure and comfortable in the world. Such dogs need our help in many ways, one way is they need to leave that painful past behind. Learn how to use training to support that.
On Leash Dog Aggression: Theory and Handling
There are many reasons for on leash dog aggression, but don't get too bogged down in that. Learn how to see the lunging as a symptom, not the problem, and then learn how to address the problem at the root of the behavior.
ALSO...
You'll See a LOT of Handling!
Each hands on section starts with explaining the approach we take and why, then we're on to handling and more handling. You will see plenty of dogs worked.
Dogs Unknown to Trainers
Dogs selected by Longmont Humane Society. We will not have met, handled or in anyway selected these dogs. We'll meet the dogs when you meet them. In other words, just like real life work.
WEEKEND GOALS:
Sharing as much of our process as possible. What equipment we use and why. What methods we use (or do not use) and why. Agree or disagree (and we expect plenty of both), you'll hear from two top pros in the field.
Showing actual trainers working actual dogs with actual results.
Safety. Your safety is our top priority. Safe handling practices and procedures will be demonstrated and discussed throughout. Brian as been bitten three times in his long career and Sarah once in the last 20+ years.
Brian passes his skills on. His volunteer program for training shelter dogs has an exemplary safety record with no injuries after a decade + and thousands of humans and dogs interactions.
